EARLYBIRD PASSES AVAILABLE ONLY THROUGH JUNE 30!

Journey back in time with us as we revisit the ukulele’s first two eras of mass popularity, then partake in several new festival features! The 5th Annual Palm Strings Uke Fest will be a mix of old and new. We’ll open the festival on Halloween with a “Spooky Ukes Bash,” a poolside jam-party celebrating the era of Classic Hollywood Monster Movies. The best guy and gal costumes will win a ukulele!

We’ll add banjolele friendly classes to honor the uke’s popularity on college campuses and at ritzy parties in the Roaring 20’s, and we’ll add baritone workshops in commemoration of Arthur Godfrey’s kick-start of that instrument in the 50’s. And we’ll have several all-new workshops designed just for you! Our finale will begin with a concert and morph into a swing dance!

A VERY BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UKULELE DURING THE 1900’s

After the introduction of the ukulele to the mainland at the 1915 Pan Pacific Exposition, the instrument found favor on college campuses and at ritzy parties alike throughout the roaring 20’s. Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards kept the uke popular throughout the 30’s and into the early 40’s, and in the 50’s, Arthur Godfrey jump-started a uke revival on radio and in the new medium of television. Also in the 50’s, a young messenger at MGM Studios by the name of Herbert Khaury was experimenting with different performing styles, drawing upon his encyclopedic musical knowledge and eventually settling upon a comedic character by the moniker of Tiny Tim. (Savvy ukulele enthusiasts are well aware that “Tim” was much more than his Laugh-In persona.) We’ll pay tribute to all of these eras and styles, while adding several all-new workshops.

THE FESTIVAL IN DETAIL

Our fifth annual Palm Strings Uke Fest will take a fond look back at the 1900’s while adding all new features & workshops. We’ll embrace this golden age of ukulele popularity, plus honor the campy decade of Hollywood Monster Movie Classics with our Halloween Night Opening, “Spooky Ukes Bash,” a costume-encouraged poolside jam party beneath the palms. Our location is just down the road from the historic Movie Colony from the heydey of Hollywood and our lineup is a retro-friendly amalgamation of incredibly talented ukulele personalities, combining new faces and returning favorites to our uke-in-the-desert soiree!

OUR PERFORMER/INSTRUCTORS:

Casey MacGill and Friends

Swing-Jazz Extraordinaire Casey MacGill kicks off our lineup and leads our band. Casey is one part Nat “King” Cole Trio, one part Mills Brothers, a sliver of Fats Waller, and a bit of Fats Domino—American music of many decades and no decade in particular. Next, from the north of England, comes the completely unique duo, Dead Man’s Uke. Pair a steel resonator Beltona uke once owned and played by Tiny Tim with a double-bass and you get an infectious blend of uproarious pub-savviness and retro-slickness that will transfix you. The smooth, suave, festival favorite Gerald Ross returns to the desert as does the vintage/modern mix of Dani Joy.

Victor and Penny and Friends

Also returning to the Hilton are the high energy, Antique-Pop duo Victor & Penny, Seinfeld alum-turned ukulele chanteuse, Heidi Swedberg, and her uber-talented “El Ukulele” partner, Daniel Ward. We kick off the festival on Halloween with bonus Earlybird workshops and a poolside, Spooky Ukes Bash,  a combination uke jam & costume ball under the palms. Costumes are not required, but imagine a party of vintage Hollywood Monster Movie characters toting ukuleles…I can’t wait! This Halloween treat is a special evening for all Earlybird passholders and their guests.

WORKSHOPS: A NEW, MORE PERSONALIZED APPROACH

Most of you attend festivals to become better players. Selecting the best workshops for you has been an uncertain process in the past, as I have tried to offer as many varying class styles as possible. For Palm Springs, we’re concentrating on a new approach in this area by creating a program that will define workshops by skill types as well as playing level and instructor. If you want to work on particular areas of your ukulele playing, you’ll be able to determine an optimal schedule. Workshop and performance specifics will be added as the festival date draws closer. To receive updates please join our email list.

TWO FULL DAYS OF UKULELE BLISS—PLUS BONUS DAY FOR EARLYBIRDS!
