I purchased 2 of your Gizmos for Christmas gifts…LOVE LOVE LOVE IT…just discovered your video tutorial today and plan to watch it tomorrow…. I had to write a fan letter to you this morning…

The 2010 Winter Folk Festival just concluded in my small town of Florence, Oregon, and this year the Florence Ukulele Club (of which my husband and I are members) was invited to attend the after-hours music jams. At the jams, local musicians and festival performers gather in a big circle and pass around the microphone. Songs are played with the idea that others can join in and play along.

Thanks to your Official Ukulele Chord Theory Tutor Gizmo we were pretty darned successful! If the performer shouted out something like “this one’s in the key of D,” we were able to quickly and easily set-up the root chord on the Gizmo, in this case D, and then apply the 1-4-5 pattern used in many songs. So, for D, we identified that the 4-chord is G and 5-chord is A. Then we listened for chord changes and started trying the chords out–soon we were playing along!

I felt so much more confident, and was delighted to be playing along with the accomplished musicians in the circle. This was especially liberating for me because I’m one of those people who is very dependent on sheet music. The Gizmo gave me chords, but it also gave me the courage and edge I needed in order to join in.

Best,
Janet W

Doug… Very cool gizmo. I was a music major in college 30 plus yrs ago and I think this is great for learning or refreshing one’s music theory knowledge. Thanks for offering it! How did you develop this?

I don’t know what took me so long to get these. My friend Alan from Ventura, who is coming to the ukefest, has one and says it’s necessary. See you soon!
