Uke Tutor Gizmo & Videos

Gizmo Version 2 is on the way! Shipping early February

We sold out of our first press run. Thanks! So I designed a new version… A little thicker… A little smaller… (And 95 cents more… sorry about that). If you’re relatively new to the uke and would like to learn to play chords more intuitively when alone or with others, this is the best $6.95 you’ll ever spend on a ukulele lesson. Check out a few testimonials then read all about the new Ukulele Chord Theory Tutor Gizmo from PlayUke.net.

If you are comfortable with common chords and want to advance to chord-wizardry, this is the tool for you, too! The Official Ukulele Chord Theory Tutor Gizmo™ from PlayUke.net is kind of like a slide rule for the uke! You can use it to take a quick, self-guided lesson anytime you wish. It fits in your case, requires no computer, and costs about the same as a burger (but doesn’t make your case smell like onions!) Let’s take a quick tour…

There are comprehensive instructions with the “Gizmo,” but we’ll run over a couple of its features for you here. There are two “parts” to the front of the card, appropriately named The Green Part and The Purple Part. (There are chord charts, chord formulas, and a fretboard chart too, which all work in conjunction).

Gizmo-GreenThe Green Part is for beginners and relative newbies to playing songs alone or jamming with others. A huge percentage of popular songs and especially sing-a-longs, are written in a common pattern known as 1-4-5. The Green Part helps you anticipate and “develop and ear for” what chords you can expect to play in a song. Here’s how part of it works: If you’re jamming with others and somebody calls out a song to play, they most likely will also tell you what key the song will be played in. You simply slide the Gizmo’s slider so that the key is in the R1 (or Root – 1st) position. The Gizmo then gives you the other major and minor chords you can expect to encounter in the song in the 4, 5, and m positions. There’s a little more to it than that, but that’s the basics.

Gizmo-PurpleThe Purple Part is for intermediate players or anyone who wants to learn the “why” of chords, to the point where you will be able to change one type of chord to another and understand why you are doing it. Like with The Green Part, you place any note in the R1 position and The Purple Part shows you the other notes that make up the type of chord you are playing. By using this in conjunction with the chord charts, fretboard chart, and chord formulas that are also on the chord, you will learn chord structure and develop the knowledge required to eventually master the entire ukulele fretboard. The Purple Part is meant to be a Tutor. You approach it’s use as if you were taking a one-minute lesson. Again, there are comprehensive inteructions that guide you through each step.

You should have a basic idea of at least a couple of simple chords before watching these videos. That said, they are repetitive and redundant in many places so that beginners can grasp the concepts discussed. And, if you don’t own the Tutor Gizmo being demonstrated, you should refer to the diagram at the top of this page or… order one!
